How I Started Drawing

My First Creations - From Crayons To Photoshop

From an early age, I was fascinated by the world around me. Whether I held a book, looked out the window or watched television, everything was a source of inspiration. My introduction to coloring books became the first spark that pulled me towards self-expression and creativity.

I remember holding crayons with care as I filled each page of my coloring book. I didn’t understand colors but I was excited to see what every crayon would look like on paper. A vivid memory I have is coloring small geometric shapes different colors, forming a wide bottom and small point on top. I would realize, years later, the image I took great care to fill in had been the Eiffel Tower.

The most interesting part wasn’t the coloring. I loved the ability to mark paper. By the time I understood color, I was drawing on the covers of each coloring book. Soon, my efforts continued with every piece of paper I could find, capturing the world as I saw it.

A few years later, I walked to school along the highway and came across several round ceramic tiles. These white treasures sat in the tall grass waiting to be discovered. What others would see as reflective disks to toss away I saw as a round canvas. Over time, I began to draw and paint sunsets, mountains and cityscapes. After using up the found tiles, I looked for smooth rocks. As I created my own works of art, I would give them away to friends and family. In my mind I was sharing my dreams.

As I grew older, I discovered more tools. Pencils and pens were everywhere. Markers were a favorite. When I discovered comic strips in a newspaper, I saw each caricature as inspiration and began drawing my own. As a teenager, I remember drawing a door-sized smiling Grim Reaper. I drew this with a Bic pen. The drawing took weeks but I patiently drew it from top to bottom, enjoying every line, every shade and every detail.

By the time I went to college, drawing was a part of my daily habits. I had sketch pads, I used pastels, ink, charcoal and a variety of tools I picked up each year. No matter what form of expression I came across, it became an outlet for my creative works. From drawing in dirt with a stick to using art pads, poster boards and canvas, I’ve always wanted to capture every thought, every joy and every dream. Whether I used crayons or computers, the only thing that matters is transforming a blank surface into a dream I can share.

The best thing about following your creative passion is how it can be done with almost any tool. It can be a piece of charcoal on newsprint or the latest electronic gadget. We all have a creative spark inside that drives us to tell our stories and share our dreams. I try to keep learning new ways to express myself. From crayons to photoshop, every idea we have, every dream we follow and every passion we feel can be expressed. I hope you find your outlet of choice and share your dreams with friends, family and the world.
