I make a list every year. Some years I stick to it and others...
As a writer, it is important to write as much as possible. Writing on a regular basis can help you find the style you prefer, the genre you favor and the point of view you lean towards. However, in order to expand the worlds being created, I’ve always found it important to read as much as, if not more, than I write. That is why I put together a list of books to read each year so I can read at least one book a month on top of my own writing.
My plan is always to get through one book as each month ends, but as February came to a close, I finished four books.
The first book I read was.
Starsight by Bradon Sanderson. This is the continuation of the Skyward series. In book one, the characters, futuristic settings and most importantly, the hero, made it an enjoyable read. Book two continues the tale with more revelations, new favorite aliens and a cliff-hanger that made me eager for the release of the next installment.
The second book I read was:
In the Heart of the Fire by Dean Koontz. I discovered this book by accident. I was browsing my Amazon purchases when I noticed the book and realized it was by a favorite author. I wanted to look away. I have other books by Dean Koontz on my list and had no plan to begin another. I gave it a quick glance, read the first few lines and was pulled into the story.
The third book was:
The Phobos Resurrection by Norton D. McClure. I was introduced to this book via Instagram at the beginning of the year and read it in February. It is a great indie scifi tale with elements science fiction readers will love. Quirky characters, artificial life forms and a story that keeps getting better with every turn of the page. I’m glad to have found this author and look forward to reading more in the years to come.
The fourth book was:
Fall of Hades by Richard Paul Evans. This is the sixth book in the Michael Vey series and every chapter adds to the suspense. The Electro-Clan continue to discover new things about their abilities as they continue fighting inner doubts, fears of what is to come and staying together as a final showdown with the monstrous Hatch draws near. I can’t wait to see how the series will conclude.
My complete list for 2020 is as follows:
1. Starsight by Brandon Sanderson (Done!)
2. Fall of Hades by Richard Paul Evans (Almost done)
3. Paloma by Kristine Kathryn Rusch. (Book 5 of the Retrieval Artist series)
4. Diving into the Wreck by Kristine Kathryn Rusch.
5. Death Without Company by Craig Johnson
6. #1 in Customer Service The Complete Adventures of Tom Stranger by Larry Correia
7. Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson. (I always try to read a classic or two each year.)
8. Monster Hunter International by Larry Correia
9. The Forbidden Door by Dean Koontz. (I just can’t keep away from this guy!)
10. Peter Pan by J.M. Barrie. (Another classic to consume)
11. The Hobbit, or There and Back Again by J.R.R. Tolkien (Audio version. Can’t wait!)
12. The Night Window by Dean Koontz. (Jane Hawk book 5. Gotta see how it ends!)
I also plan to read:
Photographing The Dead by Dean Koontz. This is another one of the surprises Koontz dropped into my lap when I wasn’t looking. The first book was a great surprise and now I intend to sneak in one or more every month until I get through all of these short novels.
I look forward to reading each book on my list and am happy to add more as time permits.
Feel free to recommend a book or two of your own list and if you read one of my books, feel free to leave a review. I’m always happy to know someone has read my tales. Sharing the stories we create is part of the excitement of writing. Until then, I hope you check out a few bookstores, libraries and reading nooks. Between every book cover is another world to explore. I’ll see you there.
